Advanced Studies in School Psychology leading to the Certificate of Advanced Studies in School Psychology and eligibility for Oklahoma and National Certification as a Specialist Level School Psychologist.

School Psychology

The Psychology Department of the University of Central Oklahoma offers an advanced studies program in School Psychology. This program leads to Oklahoma and national certification authorizing the holder to serve as a School Psychologist in Oklahoma schools and states honoring the NCSP. Certification requires certain prerequisites, a master's degree in psychology or a related field, 60 hours of specific graduate coursework (including 300 clock hours of practica and a 1500 clock-hour internship), a School Psychology Portfolio, and passing scores on the national PRAXIS II School Psychology Exam. Students who already hold a master's degree may complete the requirements for School Psychology without obtaining an additional degree, as long as they obtain the required coursework.

UCO’s Graduate School Psychology Program is a NASP accredited Program.  Students may pursue the MA in School Psychology or the Post-Graduate Advanced Graduate Studies in School Psychology track.  Both tracks lead to the Certificate of Advanced Studies in School Psychology and NCSP (National Certification in School Psychology).

Prerequisites

Prerequisites Applicants to the Post-Graduate Advanced Graduate Studies in School Psychology track within the School Psychology program, must meet departmental requirements of a GPA of 2.75, a 900 on the GRE (or a 3.5 on the Writing Portion of the GRE), 3 letters of recommendation, a recent resume, and the following courses [or equivalent courses].  Equivalency is determined by catalog description or syllabus from course.

If a course in the applicant’s Master’s Degree meets the test of equivalency and recency to the course for which substitution is requested, courses from the Master’s Degree may be counted toward completion of the Advanced Graduate Studies track. Proof of equivalency and recency requires a catalog description (in most cases a syllabus) as well as evidence that the applicant possesses the knowledge and/or skills represented by the UCO course for which equivalency is sought.  Applicants can secure course substitution forms from the Program Coordinator in the Psychology Department.
