Q. What is the difference between psychometry/educational diagnostician
and school psychology?
A. Both are teaching certificates, although neither involve "teaching".
The
psychometry/educational diagnostician certificate and the school
psychology certificate are issued by the State Department of Education (SDE).
One must hold a master's degree at the time of application for either
certificate. Psychometry/educational diagnostician
certification requires certain prerequisites, a master's degree in
psychology or a related field, 27 hours of specific graduate coursework,
and passing scores on the State of Oklahoma Certification Tests (OGET,
OPTI and SAT). Psychometrists primarily provide limited assessment
services for school-age children and are often employed by the Regional
Educational Service Centers (an agency of the SDE). Also, some schools
in Oklahoma employ psychometrists.
School psychology certification requires certain prerequisites, a
master's degree in psychology or a related field, 60 hours of specific
graduate coursework (including two practica and an internship totaling
1500 hours), and passing scores on the State of Oklahoma Certification
Tests (OGET, OPTI and SAT). School psychologists are trained in
education, mental health, child development and learning theory. They
are problem solvers who, working with others, assist in changing
environments, attitudes and systems to help children use their strengths
to succeed in academic learning, social skills, and citizenship. School
psychologists coordinate and evaluate needs unique to individuals with
special curriculum,, instruction, and school reform. This is carried out
through team problem solving, consultation, training (staff, teacher,
and parent), research and evaluation, direct interventions, assessment,
referral and case management in collaboration with other pupil services
professionals, such as school social workers, counselors and others.
