The Department of Professional Teacher Education provides the pedagogy for all undergraduate teacher education programs and as such does not offer an undergraduate-level program. The department furnishes the teacher education undergraduate courses and field experiences for teacher education programs. The University of Central Oklahoma's teacher education programs combine the knowledge students gain from their content subject areas with effective teaching competencies and experiences to thoroughly prepare teachers.
Professional Education Sequence Undergraduate Courses
Students must complete 28-32 hours of courses in the professional education sequence, which includes studies in human growth and development, educational psychology, foundations of education, instructional technology, instructional design, educational assessment, theories and techniques for teaching exceptional individuals, directed observations, student teaching and methods of teaching. Most of the courses in the undergraduate professional sequence are offered through the Professional Teacher Education Department, but not all.
Professional Education Sequence Field Experiences
Early field experiences are an important part of teacher education and give pre-service teachers direct experience working with students. During their pre-service participation courses, students are given opportunities to observe and participate in classes through placement in local area schools. In addition, as part of these courses, students meet regularly with university faculty members for assistance and evaluation. These courses allow students to integrate theory and practice and to develop specific teaching skills before student teaching. Ms. Joyce Anderson, Director of Field Experiences, Teacher Education Services is responsible for student placement in each of the field experiences.
