What is the Instructional Technology Center?
The Instructional Technology Center (ITC) is a College of Education and
Professional Services-based
support service. The ITC’s principal function is to provide media and technology
resources to College of Education and Professional Services classrooms and to assist faculty and students
as they use these resources to enhance their teaching and learning.
Where is the ITC? How can I talk to someone there?
The Instructional Technology Center (ITC) is located in Room 211 of the
Education Building (EDU 211). You may contact the ITC Scheduling Desk by calling
extension 5965 (974-5965 if you are off campus) or by email at
coe_itc@ucok.edu.
Is there an ITC website?
Yes. You can find the ITC online at
http://www.educ.ucok.edu/itc. There you can see our hours of operation, the
student staff directory, and information about the equipment and media resources
which are available for your classroom use. You can also find our online media
collection catalog there where you can search for videos by title, key word, ITC
number, or just browse our 580+ VHS, DVD, or CD-ROM titles! Click the “ITC
Media” button at the top right-hand side of every web page to access the catalog
(or you can go there directly at
http://www.educ.ucok.edu/itc-media). Perhaps the most popular online feature
of the ITC web site is the online Media and Technology Request Form. You can use
it to reserve equipment and media for your classes from your office or from home
at any time of the day or night. Click the “Request Form” button at the top
right-hand side of every web page to access the request form (or you can go
there directly at
http://www.educ.ucok.edu/itc-request).
What types of equipment resources does the ITC have to offer?
ITC maintains a variety of audio-visual and computing equipment which can be
reserved for classroom activities. For a current list of what’s available,
please visit the ITC web site and click on “Resources” in the left-hand
navigation column.
What multimedia resources are available?
The ITC’s media collection contains over 580 educational videos covering a wide
range of topics which you may reserve for classroom viewing. The media
collection is updated every year by requests made by CEPS faculty as the budget
allows. For a current list of what’s available and other related information,
please visit the ITC web site and click on “Media” in the left-hand navigation
column.
Note: Be aware that a large number of educational videos can be found in the
Chambers Library's Multimedia Center Collection, located on the fourth floor of
Chambers Library Building. You may search for videos using the Library's online
catalog, call extension 2878 to speak with a library assistant, or stop by the
Reference Desk on the first floor. A librarian or library assistant will be
happy to help you.
How do I request resources from the ITC?
You can request ITC resources in 3 ways.
1. Paper Request Form
You may come to ITC and fill out a Media and Technology Request Form or download
the form here:
Request Form. Please fill the form out completely. ITC staff cannot schedule
your request with incomplete information – the software program we use literally
will not allow it. So please fill out each section.
If you use the paper request form, you must sign the form! Signed request forms
are required for loss prevention reasons, to promote fair use, and to keep an
essential paper trail for ITC transactions. This is essential if ITC resources
become lost or stolen.
2. Online Request Form
If you make your requests online, you do not have to fill out and sign the paper
ITC Media and Technology Request Form. Take care in completing the online form
and check it for accuracy before you hit the final “Request” button. After
completing the online form, you will receive an automated confirmation email
listing exactly what you requested. Your request is transmitted to the ITC’s
scheduling computer. ITC student staff will check your request against the class
schedules and if there is no problem they will enter it in the computer. If your
request does not match up with your class times, you may be called to verify
that you made the request. You may also be contacted if we have questions or
concerns about your request.
3. Telephone Request
For your convenience, the ITC does take requests by telephone. If possible,
please look at a request form as you place your request so you don’t leave out
any of the required information. You may be asked to come by and sign the form
prior to your class time. Please do not be offended; ITC student assistants are
required to ask this of you in certain cases. You will simply need to come by
EDU 211 before your class and sign the form (it will be filled out for you--you
will just need to sign it).
Do faculty with seniority preferential treatment over new faculty?
No. All requests are subject to availability and are scheduled on a first-come,
first-served basis. If your classroom activity depends on ITC equipment, please
take care to reserve it in advance. Among the more popular requests are laptop
computers and video projection equipment, but resources are limited so please
plan ahead!
Do I need training prior to reserving media or technology?
If you will be working with any technology with which you are uncomfortable,
training is recommended but optional. You may come by the ITC anytime for a
brief or in-depth training session (whichever you require). If you have special
concerns or an unusual request, please contact Rod Edwards (extension 5160 or
redwards@ucok.edu). He will be happy to
help you.
There is one exception to the “recommended but optional” training. If you would
like to use the mobile wireless laptop lab, you must complete a MANDATORY
orientation session before you can request it be reserved for your classroom
activity. This orientation must be scheduled with Rod Edwards (extension 5160 or
redwards@ucok.edu) in advance. His
availability can be limited, so please don’t wait until the day of your class!
I have students who will be doing presentations or projects who will need
technology. Can I just send them to the ITC to request equipment?
No. Due to university insurance limitations, liability issues, and policies
concerning loss prevention, students (including teaching assistants and graduate
students) cannot directly reserve media or technology from the ITC. While
student use of ITC media and technology resources in conjunction with
classroom-related events is both encouraged and supported, it must be
coordinated through individual instructors.
Note: Please be aware that YOU are accountable for all ITC resources used by
your students. While students may bring request forms to the ITC, they still
must have a faculty signature. Since you are responsible for the equipment while
your students are using it, you should be aware of and personally approve each
request they make. Never put your signature on a blank Media and Technology
Request Form and please do not distribute blank signed forms to your entire
class. This practice is an invitation to inappropriate use, theft, and/or
vandalism. Your cooperation with this policy is essential to our loss prevention
efforts!
How does the equipment/media get delivered to/picked up from my classroom?
In most cases, once you have requested equipment for classroom use, it will
already be there when you arrive in your classroom. The ITC student staff will
deliver the technology to your classroom, set it up, and make it ready for you
to use. When your class is over, it will also be picked up from the classroom.
We ask that you remember to remove your floppy disk, Zip disks, or CD-ROMs from
the laptops and/or your video tapes from the VCRs. Because equipment may have
multiple users each day, the ITC can not be responsible for your lost disks or
videos.
What if my requested item(s) is not there when I get to class?
The ITC student staff makes every effort to deliver your requested
equipment/media to your classroom before your class starts. However, this is not
always possible. We ask that you please remember that all classes start at the
same time and that there are 25 classrooms in Education Building; however, there
is only one student assistant and only one elevator. If your class is beginning
and you are concerned, please feel free to send a student to the ITC (EDU 211)
to verify that your request is coming. We will do whatever we can to get what
you need to your classroom as soon as possible.
Are there any guidelines for students giving classroom presentations in Education Building?
Yes. The web page
"Guidelines For Using Presentation Technology In The UCO Education Building"
provides basic technology guidelines. This information will be updated as necessary.
Please feel free to print it and provide it to your students.
I do not teach in the Education Building. Can I use the ITC?
The ITC is not designed to provide equipment to other buildings on campus. There
are transportation, personnel and usage-related obstacles which make this a
difficult undertaking. Additional technology funding has been made available to
departments who have faculty who do not teach in the Education Building. Your
department probably has what you require for classroom instructional purposes
already in your building. Please contact your department chair or secretary for
more information. If you cannot find what you need, please contact Rod Edwards
(extension 5160 or redwards@ucok.edu).
Note that the ITC staff is able to deliver media to your building but this will
have to be accomplished in between their normal Education Building classroom
deliveries. Please request your media well in advance of your class time.
I have an evening class. Can I still get resources and technology support
from the ITC?
Yes. During Fall and Spring, the ITC is open late during the week. Evening classes are fully supported.
I have a Friday night/weekend class. Can I still get resources and technology
support from the ITC?
No. Unfortunately, the ITC is not open on Friday evening (after 5:00 PM) or on
the weekends. If you require technology or media for classroom instructional
purposes for weekend classes, please contact Rod Edwards (extension 5160 or
redwards@ucok.edu). While the ITC cannot
deliver equipment to the classroom for you, there are other options available to
you. Rod can present your options, suggest some alternate resources and assist
you in making arrangements.
I need special help for a College of Education event I am coordinating. Can I
get special consideration?
Certainly! Please pick up a "Special Events Request Form" from the ITC or download
the form here:
Special Events Request Form. Complete the form and return it to the ITC.
After reviewing it, Rod Edwards will call you to discuss options that are
available and determine your preferences. Keep in mind that advance planning may
be required, so don’t wait until the day before your special event! The more in
advance you plan, the more options you will have.
I need a laptop for an off-campus event. Can the ITC help?
No. The ITC does not support non-classroom events. This is limitation is based
on restrictions due to funding sources, as well as personnel and loss prevention
challenges. Funds and equipment have been provided to each College of Education
and Professional Studies department specifically to support faculty attending these types of events.
Please contact your department chair or secretary for information on how to
reserve these resources.
I really need to know something that is not mentioned here. Who do I contact
with addition questions?
You are encouraged to contact Rod Edwards, the Instructional Technologist for
the College of Education and Professional Studies, with any questions, concerns, ideas, or suggestions.
He can be reached ay extension 5160 or by email at
redwards@ucok.edu and will be pleased to
help in any way he can.
