5013 Library Materials for Secondary Schools
This course examines qualitative historical and contemporary resources for young adult media center collections and presents media specialist and teacher techniques for creating meaningful literature experiences and methods of fostering lifelong reading habits. Evaluation and examination of intellectual freedom, genres, themes, literary aspects, authors, and curriculum integration are examined.

5023 Materials Selection
Principles of the selection process…policy statements, selection tools, selection criteria for all formats, community factors, collection needs, acquisitions, the publishing industry, intellectual freedom, and legal issues will be examined. Emphasis is on the school media center; students will receive practice in generating a professional selection policy, evaluating and determining age of a collection, and using bibliographic and selection tools in choosing instructional materials to improve a school library collection.

5053 School Library Administration & Internship
This course examines national, regional, and state guidelines and standards, administrative philosophies, leadership approaches, management theories, and policy development for organizing, administering, and integrating school library media center facilities, staff, resources, and budgets into the total school program. Emphasis is on effective decision-making and implementation of sound management principles.

5133 Graphic and Video Production
Defines multimedia and addresses theory and concepts regarding its fast and growing impact on society. The course provides hands-on experiences for creating beginning and advanced computer multimedia productions. This course introduces the Internet and how to cruise it and use it as a multimedia file server. Purchasing, installing and configuring multimedia computers and components is an additional feature of the course.

5223 PR & Information Skills
An introduction to the aspects of public relations essential to the success of media center operations…emphasis is placed on communicating the media center’s available materials and services to both internal and external audiences. Practice will be provided in planning and producing public relations campaigns geared to specific patron audiences and creating public relations communications tools such as brochures, flyers, newsletters, audiovisual presentations, press releases, public service announcements, and instructional lesson plans.

5233 Library Materials for Elementary Schools
This course is designed for the prospective teacher or librarian who requires competence in building print and nonprint collections supportive of the elementary school curriculum. It surveys qualitative historical and contemporary resources for children’s media center collections and presents media specialist and teacher techniques for creating meaningful literature experiences and methods of fostering lifelong reading habits. Evaluation, examination, and application of intellectual freedom, genres, themes, literary aspects, assessment criteria, authors, illustrators, and curriculum integration are studied.

5413 Effective Writing in Instructional Media
This course emphasizes reader-centered writing in the creation of instructional materials by extracting, evaluating, and synthesizing information.  Students develop skills in business documents, grant proposals, technical reports, and presentations.  Styles of writing and audiences are examined.

5423 Reference & Bibliography
Survey of basic reference materials in each subject division…practice in use of various reference methods and sources is provided.   Topics covered include the basic tools, methods of research, and bibliographic sources available for use in all levels of school library media centers. Print, CD-ROM, and online computer indexes and databases are reviewed and evaluated. Instruction and practice in use of the Internet for finding on-line reference sources and research materials is also provided.

5453 Cataloging and Classification
A study of descriptive cataloging rules, creation of MARC records, bibliographic networks, electronic and printed catalogs, formulation of assimilation and dissemination policies and procedures and Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress classification systems. Instruction and applied practice in descriptive cataloging and assignment of subject headings suitable for school library media centers.

5543 Instructional Design & Development I
A study of cooperative designing of instruction for classroom teachers and media specialists. It is an overview of the systematic design process, its rationale, and its uses. Components of the course include needs analysis, instructional analysis, instructional objectives, motivational strategies, learner analysis, and prescriptions.

5863 Elements of Web Design
This course takes the foundation production skills learned in Production I and adds the more advanced skills needed for video production and web design. Emphasis is on planning, design, and development of instructional and information products.
