General Information

The Instructional Media program embodies the requirements for a master of education and the courses specified by the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation and the Oklahoma State Department of Education to receive PK-12 school library media specialist standard, advanced certification. While many of the courses are the same as those taken by future public, academic, and special librarians, the focus of this program option is the school library media specialist.

The Applied Technology option of the Instructional Media program is still available, but courses will only be offered when enrollment numbers can be reached for a cohort group.  Call 974-5886 for additional information on the applied technology option.

Course prefixes are identified as, and the program is referred to as Instructional Media Education (IME).

UCO’s Instructional Media program serves a unique need - we specialize in preparing school library media specialists and all course assignments and projects will emphasize the school setting.   Our students represent a broad geographic clientele, and UCO is preparing a large portion of Oklahoma’s school library media specialist personnel for this high demand, low supply, advanced certification area.  Much of the coursework for the program is currently available either totally or partially at a distance, and our goal is to have the Library Information option available totally at a distance in the near future.

Graduate College Requirements

Students seeking an M.Ed. in Instructional Media must fulfill the following requirements before they will be formally admitted to the program.

Pick up the program’s Plan of Study and Information Packet from Stephanie Beauchamp, Director of Graduate Studies for the College of Education and Professional Studies in ED207 (405-974-5105 sbeauchamp@ucok.edu).  The Plan of Study must be filed with CGS&R before admission will be completed.  The packet contains applications for admittance to the University and the Graduate College, as well as a required recommendation for admittance form.  It is recommended that you meet with Stephanie then visit with Dr. Wakefield, as IME Program Coordinator.

Gain admission to the University

Apply for admission to the Joe C. Jackson College of Graduate Studies & Research, Room 404, University Center

Complete all prerequisites, if any, as determined by the graduate advisor.

Earn eight hours of graduate credit at the University of Central Oklahoma with a minimum 3.00 GPA with no grade below a “C”.

Supply the CGS&R with a copy of a current Oklahoma Standard Teaching Certificate or License.

The student may choose an advisor from any of the three full-time IME faculty, but the Program Coordinator (currently Dr. Wakefield) is the primary student advisor.

To gain admission to the CGS&R, the student must meet one of the following standards:

-  attain a 2.75 or higher Grade Point Average (GPA) in all undergraduate hours attempted;
-  attain a 2.75 or higher GPA in the last 60 hours of undergraduate hours attempted;
-  earn a minimum of six graduate hours at another accredited institution with a 3.00 or higher GPA in all graduate hours attempted;
earn a master’s degree from an accredited institution;

Note: No student will be admitted to this program or to the CGS&R  who does not meet the admission standard of 2.75 GPA overall, or 2.75 GPA in the last 60 hours attempted.

To remain in good academic standing with the Graduate College and the IME program, the student must maintain an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher. The first semester a student’s overall graduate GPA falls below 3.0, the student will be placed on probation. The student will remain on probation until his/her overall graduate GPA is brought to 3.00 or higher.  While on probation, if a student’s GPA for any single semester falls below a 3.00, the student will be suspended. The student is suspended from the Graduate College for one sixteen week semester and must apply for readmission through the Retention Committee of the Graduate College.
